A transformative design for a former industrial warehouse in the Surry Hills district of Sydney into four boutique residences over a ground floor commercial suite. Built in the early 1900s, the existing building’s character forms the heart of the project, and the design retains the original facade of the building, including the charcoal brick exterior and timber posts and beams. New materials such as bronze, concrete and limewashed bricks – all sourced from within Australia – are chosen for the residences above to contrast with the old whilst acknowledging the industrial history of the site.
The brick facade has been rejuvenated and new portal doors form the main entrances to both the ground floor commercial suite and the residential lobby. The original roller shutter entrance is replaced with a bespoke crittall window, completing the industrial aesthetic.
A private residential courtyard sunk into the center of the first floor allows for sun filled residences which are duel aspect and cross ventilated, whilst also providing a sanctuary from the busy streets of the city.
